A Non - invasive System for Detecting Deteriorated Crop Seeds by Amino Acid Leakage

Abstract
A non-invasive system for detecting deteriorated seeds by amino acid leakage was studied on radish and cabbage, two seed lots respectively. The seeds were first hydrated, then coated with cellulose powder to trap the amino acid leakage. The coated seeds were dried, then sprayed by 0.5% ninhydrin solution and put them 40¡É incubator for 1 hour to induce ninhydrin reaction on the cellulose layer. Bluish purple color was successfully developed on the seed coating layer in all deteriorated radish and cabbage seeds lots. The seeds were sorted into two fractions; color and non-color seeds. The non-color seeds resulted in a greater percent germination than those of control and color seeds.
